Cheapest Laptops to Run AutoCAD 2020

This post explores some of the best and cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD. We’ve given performance a priority, with the reviewed laptops coming from leading manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer.

If you’re looking for a laptop to run AutoCAD, you’re in the right place. Here’s the thing; buying a computer for students or business professionals is straightforward. It usually comes down to your budget. However, laptops to run AutoCAD must have specific requirements.

As an architect, you probably run other resource-intensive applications such as Adobe 3D Modeling, Photoshop, Solidworks, among others. To run these applications, you need a high-performance laptop to handle the workload.

Autodesk AutoCAD 2019 Minimum System Requirements

AutoCAD is one of the oldest and most popular products developed by Autodesk. It has helped millions of engineers and architects to build a virtually infinite array of projects around the world. However, like most of the software developed by Autodesk, it has a new version every year. The hardware requirements for more modern versions often change. In this post, we will list the cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD 2019 and offer high performance.

AutoCAD Minimum System Requirements

AutoCAD minimum system requirements are quite low. Most modern computers(excluding Chromebooks) can run AutoCAD with relatively decent results.

Below are the minimum system requirements for AutoCAD laptops. According to AutoDesk, the laptop must have at least:

  • 8 GB RAM (16GB Recommended)
  • 6 GB free disk space
  • A display of 1920 * 1080 with True Color
  • Windows 7 & Up
  • Basic 2.5 – 2.9 processor (3+ GHz processor recommended)

Hardware to Consider Before Laptop Purchase

The hardware under the hood is what makes a laptop appropriate for specific niche jobs. Before you buy any computer, check out the hardware configurations that work with your application.

Given AutoCAD’s system requirements, here is a list of hardware features you must consider before buying an AutoCAD laptop.

  • Processor – You must have a fast processor to handle CAD and 3D Max applications. Quad-core processors usually have multiple cores that help render files faster and smoothly. The majority of our recommended laptops come with the Intel quad-core i5, which is more affordable compared to the i7. However, if budget isn’t an issue, we’d recommend an 8th Gen i7 processor.
  • RAM – Your laptop’s performance comes down to memory. The more memory installed, the better and faster your computer runs. Running multiple applications becomes easier too. For AutoCAD, 8GB of RAM is enough for basic CAD. However, we’d suggest 16GB of RAM, which Autodesk also recommends 16GB RAM for the best results.
  • Graphics Card – Ordinarily, you don’t need an extra graphics card to run AutoCAD. Having a dedicated graphics card does help in rendering files faster.
  • Storage – Solid state drives provide the best performance for AutoCAD. They have better reading and writing speeds compared to hard drive disks. However, their price is usually slightly higher, so keep that in mind when making your decision.
  • Display – AutoDesk recommends a 1920 * 1080 (HD), TrueColor display to run AutoCAD. We recommend that you aim for full HD displays, preferably with IPS technology that renders accurate colors.

While you will be able to run AutoCAD with most screen sizes and resolution, a large display is advisable, mainly if you use AutoCAD often.

Considering these hardware requirements, let’s check our list of the cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD 2019:

Hi, I’m a chemical engineering student and I need a laptop that can run AutoCAD smoothly. I have a budget of Malaysian ringgit myr2000-2500. Do u have any suggestions? It’s ok to email me. I’ve been searching for i5 8th gen but I’m not sure what graphic card I should get. On your suggestions you didn’t list the latest i5 gen so I think there’s more cheaper options? Pls help me I would really appreciate it.

    • Value Nomad

Depends on your type of AutoCAD usage. Unless you use it for very heavy projects, a MX150 or even GTX 940M will do the trick easily.

  15. Avatar

Hi, I’m planning on buying ProBook 450 G4 i7-7500U with 8gb ram, and would it be enough to handle moderately complex 3D modlling in AutoCAD? The display is FHD with 15.6” display.
    Thanks in advance.

    • Value Nomad

It should be fine. But it has an integrated video card. For its price you may be able to get one with a dedicated video card, which will certainly make a lot of difference.

  16. Avatar

Can dell inspiron 14-3462 run autocad?

    • Value Nomad

it will run, but mostly o 2d, not very heavy projects.

Hi. I am in SA i don’t have alot of money so i want to get a laptop on a monthly contract.

What laptop would u suggest for just basic small drawings in 2D i won’t use 3D just basic small 2D in Autocad 18

    • Value Nomad

Hola, it depends on what is available on the country in South America that you are living. However, for 2D stuff you don’t need much. Anything with an i3 5th generation or higher will do. Go for at least 4 GB RAM, and a entry range dedicated card would be a good idea. Try to avoid chromebooks or anything with a small flash memory like 32 GB. Go for at least 128 GB of storage space.

  18. Avatar

Hello , could a i5 8250u nvidia mx130 and 8 gigs of ram run autocad 2d and simple 3d projects, thanks

Hi, I’m Janette. I’m planning to study architecture and I have absolutely no idea about computers. I want to buy a laptop and a separate monitor. Do you have any recommendations for me? Would appreciate your help a lot. Thanks!

    • Value Nomad

You will not need a lot if you just want to do architectural projects on AutoCAD. If you want to work with 3d graphics and render your projects into images, make sure you get a laptop with a dedicated video board and a powerful processor. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hi..i am a civil engineering student in srilanka..i want buy a computer with low price.what computer good for aotocad drawing ??(most suitable with low price) thank you..

  23. Avatar

Hi. I’m planning to eventually get a BS in Civil Engineering Technology and currently working on my AAS in Construction Management. I know that eventually, I will be using AutoCAD Civil 3D thus I am wondering if I’ll eventually have to buy a new laptop. I really enjoy my current one. It is an Acer Aspire V3-572G-700T. It has a NVIDIA GeForce 840M graphics card with 2 GB dedicated VRAM along with Intel(TM) Core i7-55000U 2.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz. It also has an 8 GB DDR3 L Memory and 2000 GB HDD. Battery life is 7 hours and according to the sticker, it’s up to 2X faster wireless which I assume is because it’s an Aspire V 15 model. The screen size is 15.6″ and it features a back-lit keyboard with a number pad. I would like some advice as to if it would be a good idea to start saving up my money. Also, if you have any recommendations that have similar features to my Acer laptop, I’d like to hear them! I’m quite fond of the keyboard being big and a long lasting battery life. Also, I prefer Acer but I’m willing to look at other laptop brands. I don’t care whether the laptop is heavy or lightweight. Overall, I’m looking for a budget-friendly laptop that’ll be easy on my wallet but I don’t mind looking at models that are equipped with a removable battery or the ability to remove the entire bottom to upgrade the components and I’m not too concerned about the ruggedness.

    • Value Nomad

Even with your laptop you will get through your Civil Eng. BS using AutoCAD. If you choose any newer Acer model with a dedicated videocard it will be enough for working with the enormous majority of civil engineering projects.

There’s no brand that is particularly better than others for autocad. As long as the specs are good enough, the laptop brand is a matter of preference. Good luck!

    I buy a Acer aspire e5 551g f57k laptop 4gb ram and 1000 gb hhd.
    Can I run Autocad here?
If there is any upgrade I Need to do. to make it better? Would you suggest the best upgrade for this laptop

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Jerald, this machine should handle Autocad just fine but 8gb RAM would be a good upgrade. Good luck!

Can Dell Inspiron 14 3000 Core i5 8th generation, 4gb RAM, can run AUTOCAD and some rendering software?

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Zeejay, You would need a minimum of 8GB RAM, preferably 16GB

    1.HP 15-db1102nm 15.6″FHD,AMD Ryzen QC R5-3500U/8GB/512 SSD/Radeon Vega 8
    2.Acer Aspire A315-54-3477 15.6″FHD,Intel DC i3-8145U/8GB/512 SSD/Intel UHD

Hey, which one is better for AutoCad 2018? Thanks in advance.

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Andjela, Both would run Autocad just fine so it’s a preference between AMD and Intel. AMD is doing some great things lately….

Hi, can help me check about Asus S400C can able to run AutoCad ?

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Kenneth, I think this Asus would struggle a bit. Consider something with 8GB RAM.

    Will hpAMD support AutoCAD 2020¿

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Ngawang, AMD is always a solid choice for a processor. If you could provide a specific model, I can help better. As long as you have at least 8GB RAM you should be alright. Good luck!

Hi, morning. i want to ask if Asus M409D with this spec ;-
    CPU / Processor: AMD® Ryzen™ 3 3200U Processor
    Memory: 4 GB Onboard memory
    Storage: 512GB PCIe® Gen3 x2 SSD
Graphic Card; Radeon™ Vega 3 Graphics
does it do well on running autocad? can you suggest more laptop with this range of price..? i hope i can get the answer from u, thank you sir

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Adam, I believe that laptop wouldn’t be quite powerful enough. 8GB RAM is basic with 16GB preferred. Good luck!

Do you think an Acer Aspire 3 (A315-53-386P) would run it?
What about the Aspire 3 A315-41-R09X.

    Thanks un advance!

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Felipe, I’m having a hard time finding the exact models for some reason. If you can provide the specs, I’m happy to take a look.

      • Avatar

First one is i3 8130u, 4GB Ram, 16 GB Optane, 1TB HDD, UHD Graphics 620.

The second one is Ryzen 5 2500U, 12 GB ram, 1TB HDD, Radeon Vega 8

        Thanks again!

        • Avatar

          Otherwise what about a Dell Inspiron 5000 (Intel HD 620, 8 GB ram, i5 7200u 3.1 GHz, 1TB HDD)

        • Matteo Cara

I like the Ryzen processor a bit better. Plus Autocad requires minimum 8GB RAM so the i3 version would be too weak. The Dell 5000 would work too although it only meets basic requirements for autocad. Good luck!

Please I would like to know if I could still use AutoCAD 2020 on my HP Elitebook 8440p with:

    Core i5
    6gb Ram
    14 inches!

    Thanks for replying

    • Matteo Cara

Hi! This HP would probably be a bit sluggish with Autocad. The basic requirement is 8GB RAM with preferred 16GB. If possible, try to get to at least 8GB for best results!

Hi, I’m planning to buy Acer Aspire 3 2070u-A315-54k with 4GB RAM, 1TBHDD+256GB SSD but only Intel HD GRAPHICS. i’m gonna use it for AUTOCAD. will this be good for Autocad inspite not having video card? thanks

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Joella, I don’t believe this Acer will run Autocad too well. It will likely run choppy. Between the video card and only 4GB RAM, I believe you might have problems running Autocad. Consider upgrading to a laptop with at least 8GB RAM.

I am currently debating between the:

    2019 ASUS VivoBook F510QA 15.6″ wideview FHD, AMD Quad-Core A12-9720P, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, 256 GB SSD
    2018 ACER Aspire 5 Business Flagship PC 15.6″ FHD 1080p i3-7100U Processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1 TB HDD

Only a 10 buck difference in price but if you were looking to get started in AutoCad, which would you prefer?
Thanks in advance. email back at [email protected] please

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Rodney, Either of these laptops would probably run Autocad well, but I’d probably go with the newer machine. Good luck!

Hi I am planning to buy an acer spin 5 with an i5 processor. Would this run autocad ok even though it doesn’t have a graphics card? I am studying chemical engineering so I think I’ll only be using it in 2D. Thanks

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Zoe, yes I agree with you. The Acer Spin 5 should be able to handle autocad, especially in 2D. Good luck!

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Diane, ideally you’d want something with at least 8GB RAM. From what I see, this Acer has only 4GB. Good luck!

I studied civil engineering.. Likewise am in need of a simple laptop ,pls i want you to recommend a low price and capable one for me b’cos my budget for it is low #35,000 to #40,000 Nigerian Naira.

    • Matteo Cara

Hi Segun, at that price point, I think you’ll have a hard time finding finding a suitable laptop. You need at least 8GB RAM and anything near the price you’ve given will have 4GB. Perhaps you can find something used? Good luck!
