Cheapest Laptops to Run AutoCAD 2021

This post explores some of the best and cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD. We’ve given performance a priority, with the reviewed laptops coming from leading manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer.

If you’re looking for a laptop to run AutoCAD, you’re in the right place. Here’s the thing; buying a computer for students or business professionals is straightforward. It usually comes down to your budget. However, laptops to run AutoCAD must have specific requirements.

As an architect, you probably run other resource-intensive applications such as Adobe 3D Modeling, Photoshop, Solidworks, among others. To run these applications, you need a high-performance laptop to handle the workload.

Autodesk AutoCAD 2019 Minimum System Requirements

AutoCAD is one of the oldest and most popular products developed by Autodesk. It has helped millions of engineers and architects to build a virtually infinite array of projects around the world. However, like most of the software developed by Autodesk, it has a new version every year. The hardware requirements for more modern versions often change. In this post, we will list the cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD 2019 and offer high performance.

AutoCAD Minimum System Requirements

AutoCAD minimum system requirements are quite low. Most modern computers(excluding Chromebooks) can run AutoCAD with relatively decent results.

Below are the minimum system requirements for AutoCAD laptops. According to AutoDesk, the laptop must have at least:

  • 8 GB RAM (16GB Recommended)
  • 6 GB free disk space
  • A display of 1920 * 1080 with True Color
  • Windows 7 & Up
  • Basic 2.5 – 2.9 processor (3+ GHz processor recommended)

Hardware to Consider Before Laptop Purchase

The hardware under the hood is what makes a laptop appropriate for specific niche jobs. Before you buy any computer, check out the hardware configurations that work with your application.

Given AutoCAD’s system requirements, here is a list of hardware features you must consider before buying an AutoCAD laptop.

  • Processor – You must have a fast processor to handle CAD and 3D Max applications. Quad-core processors usually have multiple cores that help render files faster and smoothly. The majority of our recommended laptops come with the Intel quad-core i5, which is more affordable compared to the i7. However, if budget isn’t an issue, we’d recommend an 8th Gen i7 processor.
  • RAM – Your laptop’s performance comes down to memory. The more memory installed, the better and faster your computer runs. Running multiple applications becomes easier too. For AutoCAD, 8GB of RAM is enough for basic CAD. However, we’d suggest 16GB of RAM, which Autodesk also recommends 16GB RAM for the best results.
  • Graphics Card – Ordinarily, you don’t need an extra graphics card to run AutoCAD. Having a dedicated graphics card does help in rendering files faster.
  • Storage – Solid state drives provide the best performance for AutoCAD. They have better reading and writing speeds compared to hard drive disks. However, their price is usually slightly higher, so keep that in mind when making your decision.
  • Display – AutoDesk recommends a 1920 * 1080 (HD), TrueColor display to run AutoCAD. We recommend that you aim for full HD displays, preferably with IPS technology that renders accurate colors.

While you will be able to run AutoCAD with most screen sizes and resolution, a large display is advisable, mainly if you use AutoCAD often.

Considering these hardware requirements, let’s check our list of the cheapest laptops to run AutoCAD 2019:

  3. Hi! I am an incoming mechanical engineering student and finding a laptop that can run auto-cad with a Php 30k budget. Hope you’ll help me. Thank you very much!

    • Hi, I believe you mean for Php 30k the Philippines Peso. I am not sure what models are available there at the moment. You have to follow the requriments suggested from Autodesk and try to find one that has more or less these specs and fits your budget.

  4. Hi, I’m studying RHVAC – Refrigeration, Heating,Ventilation and Air Conditioning – now in year 2. I’ve been using Autocad 13 on a simple laptop and it’s been OK for simple stuff. But now I have to start using Autodesk Inventor 2016 and AutoCad 2016.

    So I guess I need a new laptop, 14 inch is OK. Will this one do – Asus A442UR-GA044T – Core i5-8250U | RAM DDR4 4GB | HDD 1TB | NVIDIA GT930MX 2GB ??

  5. Is laptop HP 250 G6 SSD Celeron would be good for autocad, for example making evacuations plans and a bit 3d modeling?

  7. Hi, I’m a chemical engineering student and I need a laptop that can run AutoCAD smoothly. I have a budget of Malaysian ringgit myr2000-2500. Do u have any suggestions? It’s ok to email me. I’ve been searching for i5 8th gen but I’m not sure what graphic card I should get. On your suggestions you didn’t list the latest i5 gen so I think there’s more cheaper options? Pls help me I would really appreciate it.

    • Depends on your type of AutoCAD usage. Unless you use it for very heavy projects, a MX150 or even GTX 940M will do the trick easily.

  8. Hi, I’m planning on buying ProBook 450 G4 i7-7500U with 8gb ram, and would it be enough to handle moderately complex 3D modlling in AutoCAD? The display is FHD with 15.6” display.
    Thanks in advance.

    • It should be fine. But it has an integrated video card. For its price you may be able to get one with a dedicated video card, which will certainly make a lot of difference.

  9. Hi. I am in SA i don’t have alot of money so i want to get a laptop on a monthly contract.

What laptop would u suggest for just basic small drawings in 2D i won’t use 3D just basic small 2D in Autocad 18

    • Hola, it depends on what is available on the country in South America that you are living. However, for 2D stuff you don’t need much. Anything with an i3 5th generation or higher will do. Go for at least 4 GB RAM, and a entry range dedicated card would be a good idea. Try to avoid chromebooks or anything with a small flash memory like 32 GB. Go for at least 128 GB of storage space.

  10. Hi, I’m Janette. I’m planning to study architecture and I have absolutely no idea about computers. I want to buy a laptop and a separate monitor. Do you have any recommendations for me? Would appreciate your help a lot. Thanks!

    • You will not need a lot if you just want to do architectural projects on AutoCAD. If you want to work with 3d graphics and render your projects into images, make sure you get a laptop with a dedicated video board and a powerful processor. Let me know if you have more questions.

  11. Hi..i am a civil engineering student in srilanka..i want buy a computer with low price.what computer good for aotocad drawing ??(most suitable with low price) thank you..

  12. Hi. I’m planning to eventually get a BS in Civil Engineering Technology and currently working on my AAS in Construction Management. I know that eventually, I will be using AutoCAD Civil 3D thus I am wondering if I’ll eventually have to buy a new laptop. I really enjoy my current one. It is an Acer Aspire V3-572G-700T. It has a NVIDIA GeForce 840M graphics card with 2 GB dedicated VRAM along with Intel(TM) Core i7-55000U 2.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost up to 3.0 GHz. It also has an 8 GB DDR3 L Memory and 2000 GB HDD. Battery life is 7 hours and according to the sticker, it’s up to 2X faster wireless which I assume is because it’s an Aspire V 15 model. The screen size is 15.6″ and it features a back-lit keyboard with a number pad. I would like some advice as to if it would be a good idea to start saving up my money. Also, if you have any recommendations that have similar features to my Acer laptop, I’d like to hear them! I’m quite fond of the keyboard being big and a long lasting battery life. Also, I prefer Acer but I’m willing to look at other laptop brands. I don’t care whether the laptop is heavy or lightweight. Overall, I’m looking for a budget-friendly laptop that’ll be easy on my wallet but I don’t mind looking at models that are equipped with a removable battery or the ability to remove the entire bottom to upgrade the components and I’m not too concerned about the ruggedness.

    • Even with your laptop you will get through your Civil Eng. BS using AutoCAD. If you choose any newer Acer model with a dedicated videocard it will be enough for working with the enormous majority of civil engineering projects.

  13. I’m thinking in buying a Lenovo yoga 530, it doesn’t have a dedicated graphics card but it comes with the Intel UHD 620, 256 gb of SSD, and 8 gb of ddr4 ram, and i5 8250U I study civil engineering and my question is will it run AutoCAD.

    • That is unlikely. It may even run, but the capabilities will be very limited, 3ds MAX requires much more computing power than AutoCAD

Please I would like to know if I could still use AutoCAD 2020 on my HP Elitebook 8440p with:

    Core i5
    6gb Ram
    14 inches!

    Thanks for replying

    • Hi! This HP would probably be a bit sluggish with Autocad. The basic requirement is 8GB RAM with preferred 16GB. If possible, try to get to at least 8GB for best results!

  32. Hi, I’m planning to buy Acer Aspire 3 2070u-A315-54k with 4GB RAM, 1TBHDD+256GB SSD but only Intel HD GRAPHICS. i’m gonna use it for AUTOCAD. will this be good for Autocad inspite not having video card? thanks

    • Hi Joella, I don’t believe this Acer will run Autocad too well. It will likely run choppy. Between the video card and only 4GB RAM, I believe you might have problems running Autocad. Consider upgrading to a laptop with at least 8GB RAM.

  33. I am currently debating between the:

    Hope you will answer
    Thank you!

    • Hi Supun, AutoCAD runs best with 16GB RAM. I see you have 8GB and a decent graphics card which should be enough for heavy works. Good luck!

  41. Hey, I’m an electrical student and I think autocad will be in my next sem.
can you tell me core i5 10th gen with 512 GB SSD and integrated graphics will be sufficient in the long run?

    • Hi rrr, There is a range of available hardware for this HP. As long as you have at least 8GB RAM and a decent graphics card, it will run. Good luck!

  42. so I have been looking at the new surface laptop go for a collage laptop and I was wondering if it would be able to run AutoCAD and fusion360?

    • Hi Evance, I think that Lenovo may be a bit weak to handle the heaviest of AutoCAD tasks. It will probably run ok but may freeze up now and then. Good luck!

    • Hi Sandra, I think either would work for you, but make sure they have a minimum of 8GB, preferably 16GB RAM. If I had to choose, I’d go with the Duo! Good luck!

    • Hi Karl, I think this Dell may be a little weak to run AutoCAD fully. You may be able to get away with some basic operations. You would need to get up to at least 8GB RAM. Good luck!

    • Hi Enan, No I don’t think this Toshiba could handle Autocad. 2GB RAM is far below the minimum requirement of 8GB. Autocad would consistently freeze up on you.

  43. I have my 2-year-old Lenovo ideapad core i3, and will take my CAD course this semester. having only 4gb of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card, can it able to run the latest autocad?

    • Hi Paper Samaritan, I think you could get away with it although it may freeze up every now and then for heavier works. The 4GB RAM is like you said below the minimum but also the video card isn’t optimal. I’d give it a try and maybe it’ll work well enough for you. Good luck!

  44. Hi laptop’s graphics card is intel 4000 and i cant afford buying another one there a way i can adjust it to use autocad for my works?eg lower versions compatible or something similar.please help

    • Hi Diana, yes that graphics card will likely give you some troubles. Upgrading the graphics card is possible but if you can’t do it yourself, which I caution on because you can ruin the whole board if you’re not careful, it may become cost prohibitive between the card and the installation. I wish you the best of luck.

    • Hi Jonie, just be sure it has at least 8GB RAM, that’s very important. And a better quality video card, preferably NVIDIA GeForce. Good luck!

    • Hi Angelo, I think you may run into problems with heavier files. You’d ideally want 16GB RAM and a dedicated graphics card. Good luck!

  45. Good day, sir! Is the ASUS VivoBook S14 (M433), priced at PHP 39,995, with 14-inch FHD display, Ryzen 5 4500U, Radeon Vega 6 Graphics, 8GB RAM + 512GB SSD be good enough for AutoCAD?

    • HI Thalea, yes I believe this laptop should work for you. The heaviest works work best with the 16GB RAM but this ASUS is a nice machine so should be able to hand it. Good luck!

  46. Hello! I’m a design school student and i was wondering how well would AutoCad run on Lenovo Ideapad C340-14API 14 FHD R5 3500U 8GB 512SSD W10?

    • Hi Osh, I think AutoCAD would run well but for some heavier works, it may stutter a bit. I’d recommend getting to 16GB RAM. Good luck!

    • Hi Ronin, yes I think you’ll be just fine with this Huawei but ideally you’d have 16GB RAM. Heavier works may not be super smooth but you should be ok. Good luck!
